Chadar Trek, also known as the Frozen River Trek, is a unique and thrilling trekking experience that takes place on the frozen Zanskar River in the remote Zanskar region of Ladakh, India. This 8-day trek offers a challenging adventure with stunning views of the frozen river, dramatic landscapes, and the opportunity to experience the local culture of the region. Here is a day-wise itinerary and list of things to carry for the Chadar Trek.
Today we arrive in Leh, a popular tourist destination. And, in the winter, the only way to get to Leh is by plane, where you can catch a glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayas while flying high.
Most trekkers suffer from altitude sickness, and as a result of this health issue, the government of Ladakh enacted a rule requiring anyone embarking on the Chadar Trek to spend two days in Leh for proper acclimatisation. This rule is strictly enforced by everyone who visits this location.
The trekkers must have a medical check-up at the "Tourist Information Center" per Ladakh government regulations. After approval, you can begin the Chadar Trek, and trekkers will receive permits and important documents from ALTOA and the Wildlife Department.
The trek begins in Shingra Koma, and the route includes stops at Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. Drive along the Zanskar River for one and a half hours to Chilling, Zanskar's freezing point. Begin your trek across frozen Zanskar; walking with heavy gumboots will be difficult at first. Before stepping on the ice, walk carefully and use your hiking pole to check if it is stable.
On this trek, you will steadily gain altitude. Wake up in the cold and have a hot cup of tea, coffee, and a hearty breakfast before heading to your campsite for the day, Tibb Cave.
Nerak camp is a frozen waterfall and the most beautiful point of the Chadar Trek, located 13 kilometres from Tibba Cave, and it is your campsite for the day. People from all over the world want to come here to see this frozen waterfall.
Begin your journey back to Tibb Cave after breakfast. Returning is difficult because the temperature change causes the Zanksar River to change dramatically. On the way back to Tibb Camp, you can see locals dressed in traditional attire (Woolen Gotchas). Monks can also be seen returning from Lingshed and making their way back to Leh to see this frozen waterfall.
Today you will return to Leh via Gyalpo and Shingra Koma from Tibb. On the riverbank, you can see large and high mountain walls, as well as the footprints of animals such as foxes and snow leopards. Snow Leopards can be seen if you're lucky. This is the last day you will walk over the "Chadar" white sheet. Completing this difficult frozen River trek will be an entirely new experience.
